Sin can attempt to cancel your future, but God specializes in forgiveness that makes all things work together for your good. Watch the Video Premiere of “Forgiven” by Independent Recording Artist Shenica Graham.

Behind The Music – Thematic Overview

Marriage can be a tough partnership, especially when the partners have baggage from their past lives and bad habits in the present. These things can threaten ruin to the future. “Forgiven” touches on a few of the dramatic beginnings that can spoil a relationship like jet fuel on fire. Some of these heavy weights are: alcoholism, drug addiction, prostitution, domestic violence, and infidelity.

Why such hard topics in a video released in the holiday season? Why not just sing about the virgin birth so close to Christmas? I wanted this video to mirror the real reason for the season, which is the deliverance that came to the world through the only begotten Son of God. Having suffered many challenges in life, I wanted this video to speak to people with real problems, to see themselves on the other side of drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, divorce, infidelity, domestic violence, and mental illness. These are problems facing people in the midst of cakes and family gatherings. Addiction – no matter what kind, takes a toll on everything it touches and is not only dangerous to the health of the user, it is extremely toxic in a relationship. I want people who are suffering to see that Christ is the answer: there is forgiveness while there is life; and that is the best present ever.

After accepting salvation, a life that seemed hopeless can begin to change dramatically. Prayer, praise and worship will make a difference. The blood that Jesus shed on the Cross at Calvary for the sins of the world include the washing away of everything you have done wrong in your life. Couples that read the Bible and pray together can truly stay together.

Forgiven” is inspired by the “woman at the well” from John 4:7-30. Jesus purposely takes a detour to Joppa, to intercept a woman from Samaria who needs to hear a message of forgiveness. Finding Jesus as she comes to draw water from a well, the woman is taken aback when Jesus asks her to give Him a drink of water. She questions his motive as she notes that Jews did not traditionally associate with Samaritans. She asks Him – not knowing that He is the Messiah,  “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” (John 4:9).

Jesus answered her, “If you knew [about] God’s gift [of eternal life], and who it is who says, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him [instead], and He would have given you living water (eternal life).”

John 4:10 AMP

Jesus is offering eternal life through His own life giving blood. The woman is confused as she thinks on this parable in only a carnal understanding. But Jesus will not let her go before opening her spiritual eyes. The woman asked, “Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?” and “Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and who used to drink from it himself, and his sons and his cattle also?” (John 4:11-12).

13 Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks the water that I give him will never be thirsty again.

John 4:13-14 AMP

The woman, still thinking of natural water, asks for the water that Jesus offered so that she would no longer be burdened with drawing water from the well and having to suffer the want of thirst. Jesus gives the woman a test. He knows that she has life baggage. He asks her to call her husband to the well. The woman states honestly that she has no husband. Jesus reveals his unnatural (spiritual) knowledge that He knows she is unwed and has a history of strange men in her life. To this she responds that Jesus must be a prophet. After some banter, the woman acknowledges that despite her shaky past, she does know of the Messiah who will come (John 4:25). See, even people who have problems know about the risen Savior – even if they do not apply that knowledge to their lives completely. They must be included in Christian outreach. Jesus said to the woman that HE IS THE MESSIAH she speaks of (John 4:26).

27 Just then His disciples came, and they were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. However, no one said, “What are You asking about?” or, “Why are You talking to her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar, and went into the city and began telling the people, 29 Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done! Can this be the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)?” 30 So the people left the city and were coming to Him.

John 4:27-30 AMP

The lyrics to “Forgiven” are an update to the Negro spiritual “I Know It Was The Blood,” which Shenica grew up signing in her hometown church. It explains that Christ died on the cross and bled for not just the sins of others, but for my own personal baggage.

CHORUS 1

Forgiven. I know it was the blood for me.
Forgiven. He didn’t have to do it but He did.
Forgiven. One day when I was lost, He died.
Forgiven. I know it was the blood for me.

VERSE 1

Forgiven. He told me everything I ever did.
Forgiven. Said He had the power to forgive.
Forgiven. Like a living water, I’d never thirst again.
Forgiven. And I know it was the blood for me.

CHORUS 2

Forgiven. I know it was the blood for me.
Forgiven. He didn’t have to do it but He did.
Forgiven. One day when I was lost, He died.
Forgiven. And I know… I know it was the blood.

CHORUS 3

Forgiven. I know it was the blood for me.
Forgiven. He didn’t have to do it but He did.
Forgiven. A living water, I’ll never thirst again.
Forgiven. I know. (I know I know. I know.) it was the blood.

BRIDGE

Forgiven. I am…
Forgiven. (Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.) I am…
Forgiven. (Yeah. Thank you, Lord.) I am…
Forgiven. (I know. I know. I know.) It was the blood for me.
Forgiven. One day when I was lost, He died.
(Well) But He rose again. (One day He cried) It could only have been the blood.
Forgiven. (Father, forgive them, yeah.) He told me everything I ever did.
Forgiven. (For they know not what they do.) It was the blood.

BRIDGE 2

Forgiven. (I know. I know. I know.) It was the blood for me.
It was the blood.
Forgiven. (I know. I know.) It was the blood for me.
It was the blood.
Forgiven. I know. I know. I know.) It was the blood.
I know. I know. I know.) It was the blood. (Hallelujah, I am…)

CHORUS 1

Forgiven. I know it was the blood for me.
Forgiven. He didn’t have to do it but He did.
Forgiven. One day when I was lost, He died.
Forgiven. I know it was the blood for me.

FADE / Ad Lib

Forgiven. (He told me everything I ever did.) I know it was the blood for me.
Forgiven. Said He had the power to forgive.
